Warning on turmeric- or curcumin-containing products
The TGA has advised that medications and herbal supplements containing Curcuma longa (turmeric), Curcuma aromatica, Curcuma zanthorrhiza, Curcuma zedoaria and/or curcumin may cause liver injury in some individuals. It has received 18 reports of liver injuries, including one fatality, in consumers taking products containing Curcuma longa and/or curcumin. The TGA is urging GPs to consider if a complementary medicine could be involved when treating patients who present with symptoms of liver injury, and to advise patients with existing or previous liver pathologies to avoid these products.
